Domestic Extension

Domestic Extension

The clients sought to expand the ground floor of this granite property while preserving its character. The design concept involved adding a glass extension (veranda), which required extending the pitched roof and making structural alterations to that section of the building.

The Outcome

The summer room's space was maximised by raising the existing down-stand beams, enhancing sunset views and allowing more natural light into the new rooms. The new veranda seamlessly blends with the granite surroundings, while a steel beam structure supports the area above, enabling the installation of sliding doors in the gym below.

How we did it

Our engineers designed a new structure to support the roof above the glass walls, ensuring lateral stability. The design and detailing of the new ground floor slab, seamlessly connected to the existing structure, met all thermal and damp-proofing requirements. Additionally, new steel beams were strategically concealed within the floor void to create a higher ceiling level, enhancing the overall space.

The Challenge

The work was confined to the ground floor, with no impact on the structure or finishes above. All temporary supports were carefully designed to avoid intrusion on the existing property, preserving its integrity throughout the construction process.
