Harbour Warehouses

Harbour Warehouses

Harbour Warehouses consist of five historic granite buildings dating back to 1899, which house the Jersey Maritime Museum, workshop, and various harbour facilities.

The Outcome

The project resulted in the successful restoration of the Harbour Warehouses, preserving the integrity and historical significance of the buildings while enhancing their functionality. The extensive repair and re-roofing works improved the weather resistance of the structures, ensuring their longevity and continued use as vital harbour facilities and a cultural asset for the Jersey Maritime Museum.

How we did it

Hartigan initiated the project with a thorough condition survey to assess the state of the truss timbers and roof structures. Based on our findings, we developed detailed specifications and structural designs for the re-roofing, addressing the deterioration of the roof coverings. Our team then prepared the necessary tender and contract documentation and oversaw the project as contract administrators, ensuring compliance with the specifications throughout the restoration process.

The Challenge

One of the primary challenges was addressing the significant deterioration of the roof coverings while preserving the historical character of the buildings. This required careful planning and execution to ensure that the repairs met both modern standards and heritage conservation guidelines. Coordinating with various stakeholders, including the Ports of Jersey and contractors, while minimising disruptions to the ongoing use of the warehouses added complexity to the project.
