The Outcome
This project delivered a much-needed new secondary school, replacing the ageing existing facilities. The new building was designed and constructed using the latest technologies, to provide a building that is fit to deliver the islands future educational needs.

How we did it
Hartigan’s involvement started with the production of a feasibility study, contamination desk studies and flood risk assessment at pre-Planning stage. The structure was then designed using the latest design and building modelling technology, aiming to deliver the project in accordance with BIM Level 2 protocols. The structure of the building was modelled 3-dimensionally and coordinated with the building fabric, finishes and building services.
The building is of steel frame construction, with composite concrete floor slabs. This form of construction was selected to provide maximum clear spans, allowing flexibility in arrangements of internal walls depending on future needs, and a relatively light-weight structure.

The Challenge
Challenges to the project included initial planning refusal, a difficult compulsory purchase process and budgetary constraints. These required the Design and Construction Team to work closely together to value engineer the design within the Client’s budget without compromising quality, and against an ever-looming completion date of Summer 2020.
