Little Grove Phase 2

Little Grove Phase 2

The project consists of a substantial extension to an existing care home to provide 16 new bedrooms, and associated facilities such as assisted bathrooms and communal facilities spread over 3 floors of accommodation.

The Outcome

The extension is a modern building recessed into the steeply sloping topography of the site, with the ground and first floors being effectively semi-basement structures. The design of the building is sympathetic of the historic site within which it was placed.

How we did it

A light-weight timber frame superstructure was specially selected for the building, which reduced the carbon used in the primary structure, as well as the amount of concrete required for the substructure and foundations of the new extension.

The Challenge

The key challenges to the build were the topography and the extent of the temporary works that were required to support the ground surrounding the new basements, together with the relatively constricted nature of the site.  The extension was bordered by a steep bank, existing structures, a listed tree and a public road.
