The Outcome
The granite wall on the boundary of the Mont les Vaux carpark was in poor condition, with several sections collapsed, making it inadequate to stop vehicles from descending a steep embankment toward residential properties below. The Parish of St Brelade requested an assessment, and due to the wall’s location and condition, complete removal and rebuilding to modern safety standards would have been necessary but difficult given the drop behind the wall.
How we did it
Working closely with client, Hartigan designed a specialized crash barrier combining steel and timber, designed to blend with the surroundings while providing effective impact protection. The barrier was anchored with concrete foundations, and the carpark was resurfaced using recycled asphalt, offering a sustainable and aesthetically harmonious solution.
The challenge
The site posed several challenges, as the carpark was originally formed on sands and gravels over rock, with a non-uniform shape and high potential impact speeds due to the road's alignment and angle of approach.
