St Thomas Church Spire

St Thomas Church Spire

The cracked and detached stonework of the spire and failing metalwork supporting the cross, were a significant risk and required extensive stabilising work. Hartigan’s historic building conservation engineers prepared specifications and details for the repairs, recorded the repairs and provided supervision during the contract.

The Outcome

The stonework in the spire was stabilised and repaired. The upper masonry in the spire was clamped together by tie bars attached to the cross, which provided post-tensioning to the masonry.

How we did it

To address the structural issues at St Thomas Church's spire, Hartigan implemented a detailed repair process. First, we conducted a thorough inspection to assess the damage and design a comprehensive solution. We extended the post-tensioning system to enhance stability and installed temporary restraints to secure the spire during repairs. The damaged stonework and corroded metalwork were meticulously repaired, and the cross was refurbished and regilded. This careful approach ensured the spire’s integrity and aesthetic appeal were restored while minimising risks during the construction process.

The Challenge

There were many challenges such as working at heights, confined spaces, proximity of the public to the building, and restrictive working as a result from Covid pandemic The project was a great success, and is a testament to commitment of all working on the project and the teamwork throughout the project.
