Vers La Mer

Vers La Mer

The client wished to construct a new flat roof canopy over the existing terrace, situated on the west coast with views of St Ouen’s Bay. Given the location, the roof is subject to substantial uplift forces due to strong coastal winds.

The Outcome

A new flat roof was constructed to offer shade during periods of direct sunlight, while preserving the uninterrupted views of the coastline. Completed in October 2023, the structure successfully withstood the extreme conditions of Storm Ciaran, demonstrating its resilience and effectiveness in resisting significant uplift forces.

How we did it

The steel frame supporting the timber flat roof was designed to connect through a post to the existing concrete slab above the ground-floor garage and utility room. This integration ensures structural stability and efficient load transfer between the new roof and the existing structure.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was designing structural support that could withstand the property’s exposed, elevated position, while ensuring the uninterrupted views across the bay were preserved.
