The Outcome
The completed design delivered a fully integrated structural solution that supports the building’s layout, complex roof form and long-term performance. The final scheme provides a stable and efficient structure for both the main dwelling and the orangery, with foundations, floor systems and roof elements designed to work seamlessly together.
How we did it
A comprehensive structural scheme was developed for the main dwelling, including detailed analysis of the timber cut roof and the specification of steel ridge beams and frames to suit the complex roof geometry. Timber open web floor joists and supporting steelwork were designed to achieve efficient spans and structural performance, combined with an allowance for service integration. Masonry walls were checked to ensure adequate load bearing strength and stability. Ground bearing slabs and strip foundations were designed for both the house and the separate orangery structure.
The Challenge
We successfully integrated multiple structural elements—timber, steel and masonry—into a cohesive scheme that accommodated the architectural form and the complex roof profile. Designing foundations and slabs for both the main dwelling and the orangery required careful coordination to ensure compatibility with site conditions and structural behaviour. Achieving this while maintaining buildability and long term performance formed a key part of the design process.
